AUTOMATION CONTROLS FOR NEW SHEET METAL LINE

  • CUSTOMER:
  • It is the policy of OMNI Engineering Services Inc. not to disclose customer names and/or proprietary details of projects without the client's release to do so.

  • PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
  • Improve the automation controls and integration for the new sheet metal forming line. This included the coil handler, embosser, leveler, press, press infeed servo, shear servo, shear trigger, shear exit, roll former, associated conveyors, and operator interfaces.

  • DESIGN APPROACH:
  • Develop a plan for programming the new line and implementing it without disconnecting the existing line. This included programs for the Allen-Bradley PLC5, SLC500, Panelview, and motion control using GMS software. Identify each piece of equipment and its associated control equipment and provide the ability to change desired sheet parameters or run in automatic mode. Changes made by the operator were to be simple panelview inputs. Create a documentation and training package so the local plant maintenance personnel can support it.

  • PROJECT RESULTS:
  • The new system provides a wider range of lengths and better control on the sheet metal parts. The operator interface using the panelview is very user friendly and can be used in a "semi automatic" mode for special situations for fully automatic for production. The system can be connected to a plant wide LAN for monitoring production, programming changes, or maintenance. They have reduced scrap and less down time during product change over on this new system.
