GROUND WATER REMEDIATION CONTROL

  • CUSTOMER:
  • BP Amoco

  • PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
  • This was an existing site that collects contaminated ground water and brings the water to a 24/7 water treatment facility. OMNI was to create a real time logging, monitoring and control system that would replace the existing system. The previous system merely pumped ground water to the treatment plant. The new system would place sensors throughout the facility and data models (GIS) would be created to create a ground water model of the pumping capabilities. The system would then be adjusted for optimum performance.

  • DESIGN APPROACH:
  • This system was divided into three parts: Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), a MasterPC and the Motor Control Panel (MCP).
    • The RTUs were designed in both solar powered and line powered versions. Line powered RTUs were located at every pumping well and solar powered units are mobile and can be placed at various locations in the facility. The RTUs can have up to six sensors connected to collect data as desired. The RTUs use a combination of 900MHz spread spectrum radios and fiber links for communications. All sampling rates are fully programmable from the Master PC.
    • The MasterPC is the user interface for the complete system and resides in the central office. All devices, the RTUs and PLC, use the MasterPC for a communication link. The site is configured from the MasterPC and all system details can be viewed from this point. "Profile Testing" allows a predicted model to be entered into the system and downloaded to the RTUs and the PLC which then recreate the model and collect the data. The actual model can then be compared to the predicted model to fine tune the system. The MasterPC can be accessed from remote locations so various environmental firms can download data and adjust the system (if their priority level allows that control).
    • The MCP was designed to control seven pumps with expansion to sixteen pumps. Closed loop control and flow readings are controlled here. An AB PLC and an AB Panelview 900 were used for control and user interface. An Ethernet link is used for communications between the MasterPC and the PLC.
  • PROJECT RESULTS:
  • BPAmoco has been able to reduce environmental reporting from quarterly to yearly. The ground water modeling capabilities of this system are currently being analyzed and the early results indicate that the instrumentation and modeling should have been done (as recommended) before new pumps and pump lines were implemented. Models show the location and sizing of the pumps to be not conducive to optimum performance. Facility modifications will be needed to make the system more efficient.
