HEAT TREATING SYSTEM CONTROL

  • CUSTOMER:
  • It is the policy of OMNI Engineering Services Inc. not to disclose customer names and/or proprietary details of projects without the client’s release to do so.

  • PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
  • Develop a custom controller responsible for 12 discrete temperature zones, 1 motion controller, 8 discrete digital outputs, 4 analog inputs, and 4 analog outputs. The user interface must be sophisticated. The entire system is very cost sensitive.

  • DESIGN APPROACH:
  • The approach taken was a custom designed card cage system using s split backplane and two DC power supplies to provide true redundancy for high temperature limits. The user interface is a color CRT display with an integral "touch panel". All of the software was developed in assembly language. To minimize cost, discrete analog circuitry was used wherever possible and a data acquisition system was designed which provided approximately 0.1 degree of resolution over a 1300 degree span using only 12 bits of Analog to Digital conversion. Even with the extensive performance requirements, the design was accomplished using two 8 bit microprocessors.

  • PROJECT RESULTS:
  • A high performance, cost competitive product that exceeded all projections for product life.
